There are still Mixed Baths in Japan.....they just aren't as prevalent as they used to be. In the Past there were more mixed baths because of lack of room and water, but in the Modern day while there is still some lack of room with desalination plants and such lack of water isn't as big of an issue.

Public Baths, mostly split baths these days, are still very much a thing in Japan. The reason being many of the older buildings don't have the Plumbing for a bath, the room for a bath or were just built in a time when there was no indoor plumbing, yes we still have Houses from the early 1900's and late 1800s in Japan. They tend to be rather cheap to go to, clean and very convenient....
